I'm here to announce to [livejournal.com profile] gryfndor_godess and company that I've now watched all of Arrested Development. Stay with us for 10-billion-years-late reactions. The bridal raptor has nothing to do with anything.

    • I love everyone in this morally degenerate bar.

    • GOB is my everything. HE IS EVERYTHING 2 ME. (Listen. That my type of man is DELICIOUS GARBAGE has been well documented on this blog. AS IF THERE COULD BE ANY DOUBT.) In short, ACTUAL BISEXUAL MALE STRIPPER GIGOLO MAGICIAN UNFAVORITE TRASH SON OF MY HEARTLESS INTERIOR. ✿♥‿♥✿ ✿♥‿♥✿ ✿♥‿♥✿ ✿♥‿♥✿ ✿♥‿♥✿

    • Lucille is everything I was promised and more. SHE IS BEAUTY, SHE IS GRACE, WOULD LET HER PUNCH ME IN THE FACE.

    • When I grow up I want to be born con-woman and accidental film producer Maeby Funke.

    • This is the only work in which I have enjoyed Michael Cera's presence.

    • LINDSAY!!!!

    • BUSTER!!!!

    • TOBIAS!!!!!

    • The extent to which this show is committed to incestuousness makes my heart SING. George Michael/Maeby 4ever, obviously, but also: Lindsay/Michael (not at all shocked by her eventually propositioning him, just sayin'), GOB and Michael's man love that will go on ("if you feel something moving down there it's my dove" A;SJF;KSJDFKSDJFSSJKFJ), the trollsome teasing of GOB/Lindsay (would watch in high-def, tbh), Buster and the Lucilles (eyes emoji).... God bless upper class in-breeding.

    On that note, my only quibble is how underdeveloped Lindsay's relationships with her siblings were. We did get plenty of Lindsay/Michael, but practically nothing about Lindsay/Buster or Lindsay/GOB (save for him unsuccessfully propositioning her, bless). Though, amusingly, this is lampshaded during the arc in which Michael suspects they have another sister ("do you remember growing up with a sister"/"doesn't ring a bell"/"aside from Lindsay"/"OH YEAH, LINDSAY!" /hilar).

    ~~~~ brief pause to segue to vaguely more substantial mode ~~~
    I was warned about season 4 being disappointing, and ultimately I found it a mixed bag. When it was good (the second half, for the most part) it was as good as it ever was, in my book. Buuuut, as a whole it definitely is the most uneven season.
    I'm not opposed at all to character-centric episodes (see below), but the great joy of original flavour Arrested Development was its ensemble chemistry and that was the key ingredient missing from the revival.
    And--real talk--as much as I love everyone in this bar, only half the cast could actually carry their own episodes.
    (To that point: Lucille/Buster/Maeby only getting one episode each while the likes of Michael/George Sr./George Michael get double?? Mess.)
    Another quibble I had is that the entire non-linear conceit, while cool, didn't actually... go... anywhere? The climax of the season was supposedly the Cinco de Cuatro celebration, which happened... somewhere in the middle of the season... and was also more anti than climax inasmuch as the show never took the opportunity to tie everyone's stories together in a substantial way. And by "substantial," I'm talking major-players-significantly-affecting-each-other's-choices, not merely everyone-lurking-in-periphery-of-everyone-else's-plot.
    THAT BEING SAID, I'm still glad the season exists because it was nothing if not ambitious, and I value ambition in situational comedy.
    Plus, what it lacked in cohesiveness, it made up for (somewhat) with character work. I'm not sure that any of the characters had actual arcs in the first 3 seasons?? (Speak up if you're so inclined.) Season 4, however, seemed committed to making everybody LOOK AT THEIR LIFE LOOK AT THEIR CHOICES, in the form of:
    • Michael's descent into douchebaggery. Dude was always dubious (e.g. pimping Lindsay out to their """uncle"""....), but by the end of season 4 he's actually AWARE of it for once in his life. Possibly.
    • Lindsay's supervillain origin story!
    • Lucille the secret Invisible Girl!!!!!!!!
    • Maeby conning her way into doom!!
    • George Michael finally becoming a Bluth, much to his misfortune!
    • GOB running out of forget-me-nows!!!!!!!!!! (In other news, what other show is gonna give me a storyline about their resident obligatory psychotic jackass accidentally falling in love with a man amidst a failed revenge scheme, I ask you. God is good. Jesus is alive and well and among us.)
    ... And if anyone has any idea what everyone else's episodes were supposed to be about, you are welcome to share the wisdom.
    In any case, bring on season 5, whenever the hell that'll be.
By all means have a quote party in comments. I AM 10 BILLION YEARS LATE TO THIS FANDOM.
... I'm obligated to finish this entry with a meme to appease [livejournal.com profile] vergoldung, so let's have this eyeball-pleasing one invented by [livejournal.com profile] theramble (slightly modified):
Every Effy Stonem look is a 100/10 look but as your icon reminds me, the season 3 premiere was truly an iconic (lol) sartorial moment. QUEEN OF FISHNETS AND LEAVING LITTLE TO THE IMAGINATION.
(Also, OTP nostalgia. U r welcome.)
I think I'll probably steal this meme too and do it later?
Anyway, I'm gonna be gready and ask for more characters, feel free to pick just one or two if it's too much: my baby Harry, my trash baby Draco, Hermione (I'm curious to see how you imagine her especially in her adult years. Is she a cool witch? Does she wear skirts or pants or robes? And her hair? I have many questions concerning Hermione + fashion) and finally Anya Christina Emmanuella Jenkins aka Anyanka, Patron Saint of Women Scorned.
Always love making a meme trend, u know that.
(1) lol, I'm not attracted to DanRad, but Harry JP's best look was DEFINITELY Goblet of Fire crazy hair:
Teenage me felt some type of way. Tell no one. (No idea what he's rambling about above.)
(2) Draco's best look was Half Blood Prince era of moral torment and dishevelled bathroom mirror brooding. (I cannot find good gifs of this scene at all.) How like me to find that appealing, smh.
(3) I imagine adult Hermione literally exactly as The Cursed Child imagines her! JKR finally done something right. As for the movie canon, wild-haired Hermione >>>>>>>>>>
NHF the watered-down basic-ass Hollywood franchise heroine hair after the first 2 films. *spits*
(4) My favourite Anya look, because I'm sick in the head:
nay, the credit is yours for bringing the original meme into this world~~~
and your comment has ~challenged~ me as i'm not actually attracted to half your list. ONWARDS:
(1) i lowkey panic attacked at this prompt. but i've decided (this day of the week...) on the Why So Serious photo-book look. (another top 5 album jacket btw btw).
(2) the bleached Americana aesthetic in Ice Cream Cake was #uncomfy but Seulgi was killing it ngl ngl:
(3) honestly, i'm attracted to Victoria the least (she's very conventional looking... forgive me), but Red Light is an era that exists for everyone involved.
(4) this is the first i've heard of Hwiin but i bow to your superior knowledge. and although i'd argue black-haired Hwiin >>>>>>>>>>>> (MEH! @ lighter-haired Hwiin!), for overall look i am quite partial to the cutesy pigtail braids in "Taller Than You":
(tho tbf it looks better in this shoot)
(6) i actually DO go there sufficiently to have opinions about this! the conclusion is that although "Party" was garbage, it did give us PINK SOOYOUNG:
I wouldn't be me if I didn't say Nam Woohyun for the meme, so. Also Ga In and Kim Jonghyun and also Sierra from Dollhouse and/or Dichen Lachman in general?
Thanks for the regards, friend.
I aggressively condone your plan to finish watching Arrested Development. FWIW it took a few episodes for me to get to OBSESSION level, since so much of the humour is character-driven and you have to ~know~ the characters first.
On to the ogling.
No one does haunted and malnourished amphetamine-junkie tortured romantic hero like Paradise!Nam, and I am so uncomfortable with that. (... I'm glad he's not currently being fed through an IV drip, truly.)
Enough about that.
(2) "Bloom" was one of the very first kpop things i ever saw and it remains iconic forevermore. (Blond Ga In does not get enough recognition imo.)
(3) DERANGED MAD HATTER JONGHYUN has a special place in my cavernous interior.
(4) All this time and I still have laser-sharp memories of Dichen Lachman in this heavy-linered leather-pants secret agent ensemble. (Cannot recall if her assignment was actually secret agent. Irrelevant.)
I am nothing if not consistent.
I always feel more okay with season 4 of AD than most people I know. I get the flaws in it, but I also know that years later all these actors had busy careers they had to find a way to work around. Idk if it was a perfect solution to scheduling conflicts, but I appreciate the attempt and GOB and Maeybe's storylines alone are enough for me to make it worth it tbh.
That said, for the meme, give me our queen Santanico Pandemonium aka Kisa
Very valid point about scheduling conflicts. /o\ Always a shame when the Doylist messes with the Watsonian, though. Anyway, GOB and Maeby were the stars of season 4, where are the lies.
As for Santanico, obvs THE Look that fuelled a fuckin' franchise:
(3) Speaking of Red Light, the most SHOOK I've been @ Amber's FACE were her teaser shots for that era. This cat eye game right now --
YANA on Showtime. I appreciate your recaps calling my flop stan within to action.
IDK who Nicola Roberts is, but #nice lollipop lipstick.
(1) tbh, blonde Yoona is the only Yoona I'm actually attracted to (even tho she is technically my bias, trololol). This, and pink Sooyoung, are among the few redeeming qualities of "Party".
Arrested Development!
I agree that the arcs seemed clearer in season four. I think the basic idea with Tobias is, like Michael, actually being confronted with the type of person he is: we can say this happened before, but he has multiple opportunities to pull himself together, and he actually is exposed to how frequently he fails to catch the obvious and drags other people down into his impossible dreams with the Invisible Woman (and failing to take the job from Lucille II initially, etc.). I think that the George Sr. arc in season four has to do with the idea that, in some cosmic sense, George Sr. and Oscar are the same person, that George Sr. is about control and dominance and Oscar is about laissez-faire and fun, and that George Sr. associates these with masculine/feminine traits. So the harder he denies the masculine and tries to dominate Oscar, the more feminine he's becoming, and the more dominant Oscar becomes. We can say this is Problematic depictions of gender but I think it makes sense if we view this as George Sr.'s psychology rather than any global statement. I have wondered if the producers knew that Jeffrey Tambor was going to be doing Transparent later and were making an advanced joke about that??? I think that the Buster...episode arc is setting him up to be a probable murderer, to the outside world, hence his arrest in the tag joke for Lucille II's death. Obviously there was a lot of set-up from most of the cast of having motives to kill Lucille II, to set up the big mystery. And also it looks like the signs point to Michael murdering her, and then forgetting about it because of GOB's forget-me-not, but I think that's probably a mislead.
I think during the series proper, George Michael has a definite arc -- the maturation stuff is mostly told through his and Michael's relationship and through the stages he goes through in romantic relationships, between the Maeby crush, through the doomed relationship with Anne (her?) and then the weird triangle with Maeby and Steve Holt!, with Michael finally pointing out in the last episode that he needs not to date Maeby not because of biological reasons but because she's family. Really this is actually Michael's story, too, because the whole reason for getting involved with the family again was ostensibly for George Michael's benefit, and I think, though I'm not sure, that Michael's story would become clear upon investigation. I kind of think that incest really is the key to the whole series, haha, and I'm not joking, because I think the show is basically about:
1. family
2. the moral degeneracy of the blue-blood, self-obsessed, *exclusive* rich
Date: 2016-09-13 05:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] local-max.livejournal.com
and the regularity of incest jokes/desires/etc. becomes a metaphor/literalization for the inability of the Bluth family to look outside their walls to the broader world which is so regularly shaken/destroyed by their actions. At the same time, love for family is important because who else could love these people but other narcissists or, er, the mentally challenged? (OR AUDIENCE MEMBERS) So I guess the real goal of the first three years of the series is for Michael to find a way to raise his son to be someone who actually could have a fulfilling life, which means finding a way for him to get love and support from his family without ultimately being so overwhelmed by them that he gets trapped in the never-ending web of family selfishness. Because Michael is mostly unaware of his own narcissism, he fails to see how he smothers his son, he fails to notice that there is a big romantic/sexual component to his son's love for his cousin, he tries hard to crush his son's first relationship with someone outside the family because Michael thinks she's boring, etc., but ultimately he kind of recognizes at the end of the three-season arc that his son both needs his family, and needs to have something *other* than his family. Which maybe makes sense of season four as a continuation, because at this point George Michael has a real chance at finding a life for himself which is not purely internal to the Bluths, and Michael is desperate and sad (and self-absorbed) enough to try to take it for himself, first with staying at GM's dorm room and then with the relationship with Rebel Alley.
But yeah, I think other characters' arcs are. .a little opaque. I think it's more that, in the tradition of situation comedies, they get into different situations, and that becomes their story for a while (like "Tobias wants to be in the Blue Man Group now," "Maeby is a movie producer" etc.), which is hilarious and reveals character but doesn't feel that much like a development. Though Maeby's becoming a movie producer does feel like her equivalent of the George Michael story about whether she can get outside the Bluth-only family trap.
I'm so late to this party but aaaaaaaaaahhhhhh YAY YOU FINISHED :DDD
The extent to which this show is committed to incestuousness makes my heart SING.
THIS!!! Omggg George Michael/Maeby and Michael/Lindsay!
I was warned about season 4 being disappointing, and ultimately I found it a mixed bag.
I was wondering what your reaction would be but didn't want to say anything on your last post. I was so disappointed by S4, mostly because of the lack of ensemble, as you mentioned, and also because I couldn't stand the particular way Michael's douchebaggery played out in his falling out with George Michael, because I love the relative healthiness of that relationship in the first three seasons so much (also b/c I identify with Michael a lot. All of the characters I identify with the most on television are male and end up being assholes, and Michael was sort of the exception until S4. IT'S A PROBLEM).
In any case, bring on season 5, whenever the hell that'll be.
My heart hurts just thinking that it might never happen. I NEED IT! I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO LUCILLE 2! I NEED MICHAEL AND GEORGE MICHAEL TO MAKE UP! *cries*
Have you seen Veep?? I think you would like that too since you like AD. Everyone in that bar is an asshole as well, and the dialogue is fast and furious and smart, and it has Tony Hale being very Buster-like. It's so great.
LOL, I KNOW THIS PAIN WELL. And I totally get not enjoying Michael's arc--it's not enjoyable--but it is well-written IMO? He did show plenty of flaws in S1-3 that ultimately escalated in what was a believable way for me. Overall I enjoyed S4 more than you because the elements I didn't enjoy were evened out by others I really did.
Anyway, I do have faith in Michael's future redemptive final act and reconciliation with George Michael! I WILL BELIEVE! NEVER GIVE UP HOPE. NEVER SURRENDER.
I have not seen Veep, but smh @ your tempting methods when I have a laundry list of other shows to watch.
