it's me again.

so when i posted my last post i expected five people to respond. imagine my feels upon discovering that livejournal is secretly as alive as it was in the days of yore.

real-time footage of me reading my inbox:

first order of business: in the time since we last spoke i nabbed a job as a book reviewer for some online publication. (... not a job that pays, fyi, but ? what is money ? is it food on the table ? is it contentment of the soul ? who besides kanye west can know ?) hence, i have to remember how to read and choose some new books to write about. SUGGEST ME SUGGEST ME.

in other news, i've been harangued about finishing memes and posting substantial """"content"""" to this here blog. i could do that. OR i could do this meme:

If you lost me in a crowd, what “offensive” thing could you yell that’d be GUARANTEED to track me down?

(watch yo step)

+ for music fandom comrades:

name a band and i will discuss

  • first bias

  • current bias and why

  • fave song

  • fave mv

  • otp

  • member i think has the best smile

  • fave choreo

  • fave era

  • fave voice/singer

  • fave dancer

lol, watch this get fewer comments than the last entry where i said literally nothing.

What kind of books do you prefer? Can I suggest some French/Italian literature or it's harder to find?

The band thing. I would ask Led Zeppelin but they didn't dance. So ?? I don't know. I don't think I listen to people who also dance, so I'm going with a blast from the past and my favorite girl band when I was 9: The Spice Girls!

SPICE WORLD!!!!!!

From: [identity profile] ever-neutral.livejournal.com
Woe, all my old Spice Girls feels have been misplaced but let's have a go.

First bias: I couldn't possibly know, but probably Emma since I was obsessed with being pale and blonde in grade school.
Current bias and why: Scary Spice. Obviously.
Fave song: Wannabe >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> human history.
Fave MV: Spice Up Your Life. THEY WENT IN.
Member I think has the best smile: Baby.
Fave choreo: lol no, Western choreographers don't know wtf they're doing.
Fave era: Wannabe for "friendship never ends" < / 3
Fave voice/singer: Mel C. is the best one.
Fave dancer: Sporty, clearly. Them backflips.

As for foreign literature, you may do but with the caveat that I can't read in either language. /o\

LIVE FOREVER ALEX. Maybe a little bit like Orlando.

Re book reviews: I only yesterday started hearing things about A Little Life, which is apparently a big book (700+ pages) and from the descriptions sounds like it may be a variation on hurt-comfort fic? Unsure. Also to my knowledge no one has done a joint review yet of Kim Gordon's and Chrissie Hynde's books, since the latter just came out. Also, congratulations, obviously. I am 100% in favor of unpaid creative endeavors that help the soul (also in favor of recognizing when the lack of pay starts hurting the soul, but you've got a ways to go before you get there, if you get there).

Offensive thing to shout: I mean obviously I would try to get the words "Nam Woohyun is ugly" out of my mouth, and fail.

Band: BEG, since I'm still working my way through your playlist. So far my two favorites are "Leave Mrs. Kim" and the one about being hungover, although I need to listen to "Moody Night" again.

In other news, I continue to do a terrible job of facing down the dissertation, and am officially done with mothering 3-year-olds. The birthday girl is splashing in the pool right now with her sister and her dad.

Orlando Bloom the pirate??? Or is this some higher-brow reference.... (If so then ignore.)

Thank!!!

Offensive thing to shout: I mean obviously I would try to get the words "Nam Woohyun is ugly" out of my mouth, and fail.

I mean, I'd probably point a calm finger in the direction of an optometrist's (people think Baekhyun is the best looking Exo member, live and let live, etc.); "Nam Woohyun can't sing", OTOH, be afraid!!!!

So far my two favorites are "Leave Mrs. Kim" and the one about being hungover, although I need to listen to "Moody Night" again.

EXCELLENT CHOICES, ALL. "Moody Night" is my fave so you better stan. Meme answers to come.

Sorry to hear about the bad day, dude. Godspeed with both.

First bias: I was indoctrinated into the church of Ga In very early on when Eleonore attacked me with the "Bloom" MV.
Current bias and why: I'm a faithful sort of worshipper. (Also, Ga In has an unfair edge insofar as she's with another label thus best solo promotions, easy.)
Fave song: Moody Night, as established. And Glam Girl for hair-curling sessions!!!
Member I think has the best smile: Ga In. EYESMILE~!!!!
Fave MV: Sixth Sense is one of the first kpop MVs I ever saw and possibly what has kept me alive to this day.
Fave choreo: I've never cared for Abracadabra as a song (come at me!!!) but iconic choreo for reasons.
Fave era: Kill Bill by default since that's when I ~arrived~ + Black Box is the reason I illegally downloaded their entire discography like a madwoman.
Fave voice/singer: I madly covet JeA's voice box.
Fave dancer: Ga In, bro. Her thighs in Paradise Lost saved kpop 2015.

my first thought upon reading this post "omfg i need to get my computer!!! must. type. long. response.* hahaha

OKAY LET'S DO THIS

first of all LET ME BURRY YOU WITH CONFETTI HELL YES A JOB AND A COOL ONE AT THAT shame about the lack of payment BUT AT LEAST IT IS COOL AND I IMMEDIATELY REQUEST YOU TO READ SOME BECKETT YOU HAVE BEEN PUSHING THIS OFF FOR YEARS NOW (I AM PRETTY SURE I STARTED PESTERING YOU ABOUT BECKETT/NEGATIVE SPACE IN OUR EARLY DAYS BECAUSE SUCH ARE MY WAYS PLUS I WAS EVEN MORE EMOTIONALLY COMPROMISED BY IT)

NO BUT SERIOUSLY NEGATIVE SPACE AND THE TRAGICALLY BEAUTIFUL CONDITION OF HUMAN COMMUNICATION THROUGH BROKEN WORDS AND DEAD SENTENCES /follow me

in other completely unrelated news after (sadly) not getting into any of their title tracks i randomly discovered Lovelyz's Getaway track and it has been my obsession of the week. IDK WHAT IT IS ABOUT HALF UPBEAT LOLITA TEASE SONGS THAT DOES IT SO MUCH FOR ME BUT IT IS A DEFINITE BULLETPROOF?? which i already knew but like now i'm thinking about it again and i've been trying to analyze it with no results.

"awww, namu still has so much to learn from kyo-oppa. those two are so good for each other! thank goodness woollim sees this and doesn't promote solo!nam. WOOKYO 5EVA!!!!"

for the second meme, give me kara, as i was quite surprised to see them on your intro post!!!
also NSYNC BECAUSE EVEN I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THEM I KNOW YOU HAVE THEM OLD SCHOOL FEELS SO BRING IT ON

btw, every single time you post i get a more pressing urge to get back to posting myself. continue this game, friend, we might all get there.

Books: Zen Cho's The Sorcerer to the Crown is new, getting great reviews, and apparently has a diverse cast and awesome female characters. I am only ten pages into it myself, but they were good pages! Or, Naomi Novik's Uprooted is new-ish (came out in the spring) and was great. OR, if you're writing for a website, maybe your job is to bring in page hits, in which case a problematic book might make for a more interesting review. If that's so then both the new Franzen and the new Rushdie are apparently super problematic!

Since I think the classics are sometimes the best, I would just yell "Buffy Summers is a bitch!" to track you down.

My pal [livejournal.com profile] chrisleeoctaves runs a book review blog called "The Ludic Reader" which specializes in young-adult fiction. It doesn't pay, either, but it eventually led to a part-time radio gig which does pay. If there's a particular genre of fiction that you're interested in, maybe you could focus on that? Specialization often leads to "expert" status, which can lead to consulting fees.

first bias: iirc Eleonore attempted to convert me via vids of Taeyeon singing ("devil's cry" was definitely one of them). i was not ready to accept the group into my home then but reasons why i've always had a healthy respect for Taeyeon's pipes.
current bias and why: Yoona. i know you feel me.
fave song: "hoot" and "paparazzi" were the first SNSD singles i actively liked and have a special place in my cavernous interior. + "my oh my" as previously discussed. i'm also obsessed with "talk talk" (both of them - lol). but lbr, "time machine" is #1 go-to brooding hymn.
fave mv: the misandrous "my oh my" warms the heart, does it not. + i'm here for any time SNSD does retro/classic Hollywood/bubblegum pop-soul aesthetic.
member i think has the best smile: tbh i'm still not sure why Sooyoung isn't the visual.
fave choreo: "catch me if you can" tho. too bad about the song...
fave era: "mr. mr." b/c last before you-know-what 👀 👀 👀
fave voice/singer: Taeyeon steps all over everyone else but my fave tones are actually Hyoyeon's and Tiffany's.
fave dancer: Hyo was the dance bias even before i went here.

I will suggest A History of Glitter and Blood which was just published in August by Hannah Moskowitz. It's apparently about fairies and prostitution and politics. I went to the publisher's brunch at the beginning of the season and the editor in charge of this book was super excited. I'm sure that your online publication will be able to find a copy of it for you and since it's so new, it's probably something that will need reviews.

Also the Engelsfors Trilogy by Mats Strandberg and Sara Bergmark Elfgren. The last book in the trilogy was just published this year, so it should be new enough to review. You'll have to read the other two first, but it's totally worth it. There's also a Swedish film that Ranya really loves but that I've not had the chance to watch yet. Also the other Alex loves it, too and if you read them then we can both yell at you about it a lot.

I also picked up this book called Queen of the Tearling because the second one just got published recently and the main character's name is Kelsea and I'm a narcissist? But... I haven't had the time to actually read it.

I think it would be really awesome if you started reviewing the new Ms. Marvel comics also because Kamala Khan should have ALL THE POSITIVE REVIEWS.

Also Kenna has been obsessed with/yelling at me about something called Splintered? but I'm a terrible sister, etc etc.

(lol I also freelance for a reviewing company from time to time so I'm kind of reckless about my recommendations)

For the meme:

me (shouts into a crowd):: WELL NAM WOOHYUN DOESN'T CARE ABOUT HIS FANS AND HE CAN'T SING ANYWAY THE SLUT.

For the second meme: tell me your feelings about Spice Girls, let's make this old school as hell.

Dooooo ittttttttt

It has fantastic characters, a plot that actually kept me guessing, and the characters have to face actual consequences for their mistakes (which felt fucking novel). Only sad thing is the third book is not actually published in English yet (although ARCs exist, SO I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY WE PLEBES CAN'T READ IT YET), so unless you secretly read Swedish, you'll have to wait a bit. It was SUPPOSED to come out in February of this year, and the date keeps getting pushed (my grandparents pre-ordered it for me for Christmas last year, so I keep getting very sad Amazon emails telling me that it's been delayed AGAIN).

And thank x2. Truthfully, I never matured past the age of 15 so that book will be right up my alley.

Anyway, by all means let's discuss these dick-bearers.

First bias: lol, Eleonore attacked me one day with pictures of Kris, so him.
Current bias and why: Who knows. But when in doubt vote Chen. And people will hurt me if I don't say Kai so him too. Evil!Kyungsoo deserves an honourable mention.
Fave song: Exodus - lol.
Fave MV: Why can't they go back to Mama levels of weirdness.
Member I think has the best smile: Lulu.
Fave choreo: It's gotta be Growl after that one-shot choreo vid.
Fave era: Debut Mama era. My nostalgia is real.
Fave voice/singer: Exo's vocal line is legit one of the most flaw-free in kpop but Chen is in an alien league of his own.
Fave dancer: Kai. It can be no other way.

Also, I've lowkey dropped Big Bang recently but
First bias: Just from seeing Fantastic Baby for the first time it was GD. Tell no one.
Current bias and why: Daesung is my main man. I know you feel me.
Fave song: Why can't GD write anything like Monster again?????? R.I.P.
Fave MV: I do enjoy the one-shot broodiness of Love Song.
Member I think has the best smile: GD is still the prettiest. I admit it.
Fave choreo: lol, n/a.
Fave era: The Alive era is the only one I actually followed and the last time they put out a good album, R.I.P.
Fave voice/singer: I genuinely question the sanity of anyone who doesn't answer Daesung.
Fave dancer: Taeyang, prob.

1. White feminists are a complete and utter found of inclusive wisdom. 10/10 will listen to them over every other voice.

2. I feel like I should ask about some western band but no 1 curr probably especially me.

congrats on the job!! sadly i will be of no help w/ books because i am not really reading anything at the moment (boo :() and my taste in books is occasionally questionable (/ya trash).

i think all the necessary variations of "nam woohyun" and "lack of singing talents" have been said for the offensive meme (i mean you'd even get a 2-for-1 because i would coming running right after).

being the one trick pony i am fandom-wise i will of course be /that/ person and ask for Infinite for the meme. also Shinee if you feel like it.

thank! i imagine work is eating up all your time /o\ but lol, who isn't YA trash, don't let that stop you in future.

i mean you'd even get a 2-for-1 because i would coming running right after

one day i'm gonna kill someone over this dude, and then get your help burying the evidence. or vice versa. it's gonna happen.

let's do Infinite quickly quickly before i pass out.

first bias: lol, YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE "MEN ANNOY WOMEN" CONVERSION STORY, Y/Y?
current bias and why: lmao
fave song: "the chaser"/"paradise"/"back" = the holy trinity of Infinite singles. and "up to you" is the b-side of the moment slash FOREVER JAM.
fave mv: trololol, Eleonore and i made a whole playlist of our fave terriblemazing Infinite MVs. out of that selection "btd" and "nothing's over" are the most important 2 me. FOR REASONS.
member i think has the best smile: Sungyeol's gums.
fave choreo: the choreo for "bad" is enough to forgive my rollercoaster of feels about the actual song. THE ALTERNATING H DANCE BREAKS THO. (obligatory shoutout to all the iconic choreos of yore -- "paradise", "be mine", etc.)
fave era: "back" is the most fired up i've gotten over a kpop comeback in real-time possibly ever. IT IS THE SONG OF MY DREAMS. (sadly i must deduct points for the mediocre-to-terrible wardrobe.) but if we're including eras for which i was not present, "the chaser" rules all. flaw-free song/choreo AND flaw-free styling? sorcery. (we do not talk about "paradise".)
fave voice/singer: Namstar's set of pipes is the reason i gave this group the time of day at all. BIAS ASIDE, still waiting for Dongwoo's official promotion to main vocal line. and shoutout to Sunggyu when he's singing his own shit in his tessitura.
fave dancer: i refuse to choose between H, so i'll go with the unorthodox choice of Sungjong. his "adult ceremony" performance in drag saved kpop.

so when i posted my last post i expected five people to respond. imagine my feels upon discovering that livejournal is secretly as alive as it was in the days of yore.

I'm jealous! I'm noticed a definitive shift in my flist this summer from 'small but there' to 'almost totally deserted.'
