so when i posted my last post i expected five people to respond. imagine my feels upon discovering that livejournal is secretly as alive as it was in the days of yore.

The band thing. I would ask Led Zeppelin but they didn't dance. So ?? I don't know. I don't think I listen to people who also dance, so I'm going with a blast from the past and my favorite girl band when I was 9: The Spice Girls!

Re book reviews: I only yesterday started hearing things about A Little Life, which is apparently a big book (700+ pages) and from the descriptions sounds like it may be a variation on hurt-comfort fic? Unsure. Also to my knowledge no one has done a joint review yet of Kim Gordon's and Chrissie Hynde's books, since the latter just came out. Also, congratulations, obviously. I am 100% in favor of unpaid creative endeavors that help the soul (also in favor of recognizing when the lack of pay starts hurting the soul, but you've got a ways to go before you get there, if you get there).

Offensive thing to shout: I mean obviously I would try to get the words "Nam Woohyun is ugly" out of my mouth, and fail.

Band: BEG, since I'm still working my way through your playlist. So far my two favorites are "Leave Mrs. Kim" and the one about being hungover, although I need to listen to "Moody Night" again.

In other news, I continue to do a terrible job of facing down the dissertation, and am officially done with mothering 3-year-olds. The birthday girl is splashing in the pool right now with her sister and her dad.

Fave MV: Sixth Sense is one of the first kpop MVs I ever saw and possibly what has kept me alive to this day.

Books: Zen Cho's The Sorcerer to the Crown is new, getting great reviews, and apparently has a diverse cast and awesome female characters. I am only ten pages into it myself, but they were good pages! Or, Naomi Novik's Uprooted is new-ish (came out in the spring) and was great. OR, if you're writing for a website, maybe your job is to bring in page hits, in which case a problematic book might make for a more interesting review. If that's so then both the new Franzen and the new Rushdie are apparently super problematic!

Since I think the classics are sometimes the best, I would just yell "Buffy Summers is a bitch!" to track you down.

My pal chrisleeoctaves runs a book review blog called "The Ludic Reader" which specializes in young-adult fiction. It doesn't pay, either, but it eventually led to a part-time radio gig which does pay. If there's a particular genre of fiction that you're interested in, maybe you could focus on that? Specialization often leads to "expert" status, which can lead to consulting fees.

first bias: iirc Eleonore attempted to convert me via vids of Taeyeon singing ("devil's cry" was definitely one of them). i was not ready to accept the group into my home then but reasons why i've always had a healthy respect for Taeyeon's pipes.
current bias and why: Yoona. i know you feel me.
fave song: "hoot" and "paparazzi" were the first SNSD singles i actively liked and have a special place in my cavernous interior. + "my oh my" as previously discussed. i'm also obsessed with "talk talk" (both of them - lol). but lbr, "time machine" is #1 go-to brooding hymn.

I will suggest A History of Glitter and Blood which was just published in August by Hannah Moskowitz. It's apparently about fairies and prostitution and politics. I went to the publisher's brunch at the beginning of the season and the editor in charge of this book was super excited. I'm sure that your online publication will be able to find a copy of it for you and since it's so new, it's probably something that will need reviews.

Also the Engelsfors Trilogy by Mats Strandberg and Sara Bergmark Elfgren. The last book in the trilogy was just published this year, so it should be new enough to review. You'll have to read the other two first, but it's totally worth it. There's also a Swedish film that Ranya really loves but that I've not had the chance to watch yet. Also the other Alex loves it, too and if you read them then we can both yell at you about it a lot.

I also picked up this book called Queen of the Tearling because the second one just got published recently and the main character's name is Kelsea and I'm a narcissist? But... I haven't had the time to actually read it.

I think it would be really awesome if you started reviewing the new Ms. Marvel comics also because Kamala Khan should have ALL THE POSITIVE REVIEWS.

Also Kenna has been obsessed with/yelling at me about something called Splintered? but I'm a terrible sister, etc etc.

(lol I also freelance for a reviewing company from time to time so I'm kind of reckless about my recommendations)

It has fantastic characters, a plot that actually kept me guessing, and the characters have to face actual consequences for their mistakes (which felt fucking novel). Only sad thing is the third book is not actually published in English yet (although ARCs exist, SO I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY WE PLEBES CAN'T READ IT YET), so unless you secretly read Swedish, you'll have to wait a bit. It was SUPPOSED to come out in February of this year, and the date keeps getting pushed (my grandparents pre-ordered it for me for Christmas last year, so I keep getting very sad Amazon emails telling me that it's been delayed AGAIN).
